Essay Structure

December 11th 2020

By now, I had to work on an essay structure. But before I did anything, I had to figure out how to do an essay structure and so our best friend— Google— came in.

I used this as a guide in how to make an essay structure even though I was still kind of lost on what exactly needed to go into it.

Putting that aside in the meantime, I decided to look into my content and/or topic. I stumbled upon many sources on graphic design and pop culture, one that stood out to me the most was Steven Heller's book Pop: How graphic design shapes popular culture. Although this was not really what I needed as I was going into more of corporate culture, I found this book really interesting and spent a good amount of time going through it. I thought of incorporating pop culture into my essay as well and as far as I managed to get with that in terms of my essay structure is shown below.

After hours of searching, I realised I could not seem to find what I needed for my corporate culture/identity and societal culture with graphic design. I know for a fact that there would be plenty of resources out there I can use but I just could not find them— maybe my heart and mind just was not in it, I do not know. I also realised that what I had was way too messy. Each topic was something in its own that could be talked about alone and that if I learnt anything from writing my essay last sem is that I should not try talk about everything. I needed to cut down and focus on one thing. Going through what I found, I decided to just talk about graphic design and pop culture since it was right in front of me and it had piqued my interest. Which then allowed me to form a new essay structure.

Talking only about pop culture allowed me to go more in depth in my research and everything else in general. It allowed me to separate the topics of music, film, and art into different paragraphs as it was too much to fill into one paragraph. I felt so much happier with this as I actually felt like I had a grasp of what I was doing and needed to do. A plus point was that I was most definitely excited to go into researching and writing about this as it has to do with music (and film and art of course but music mostly excited me).

Extra Notes From Lecturer:

- Think about the years I want to cover, compare, etc. and narrow it down. Question and look for exactly what and how graphic designers changed popular culture.

- Essay structure needs to be more of questions rather than statements. Ask the questions and look for the answers and thats the essay.
